Foods Dogs Can Eat With Cushing's Disease

Cushing's disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism is caused by excessive amounts of cortisone due to an overactive adrenal gland. Symptoms include hair loss, an increase in appetite, increased urination and excessive water consumption. A proper diet can significantly improve the health of a dog suffering from Cushing's disease.

  1. Natural Diet

    • Dogs suffering from Cushing's disease need to be on a natural diet that consists of raw meats and vegetables.

    Protein Diet

    • A diet that consists of high quality protein foods such as milk and eggs are beneficial. These foods contain the right amount of amino acids which improve the liver and kidneys.

    High Levels of Potassium

    • Dogs with Cushing's disease need to eat foods that are high in potassium such as beans, broccoli and potatoes with the skin. This is especially important if your dog is on medication.

    Low Levels of Fat

    • Your dog must take in foods that have low levels of fat such as low fat cottage cheese.

    Commercial Dog Food and Treats

    • Commercial dog food and treats are not recommended for animals with Cushing's disease. Not only does it have a high fat content, it can bring on symptoms and make the disease worse. Dogs with Cushing's disease must eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. A slice of apple or carrot is recommended as a a treat.
