Chinese Crested Diet

Chinese Crested Terriers actually come from Africa. They are called Chinese Crested because Chinese traders saw them on the coast of Africa and took them on board their ships to hunt vermin, and gave the dogs their name. Chinese Crested terriers are generally healthy animals, although they have a few genetic predispositions. They can eat a normal diet, but optimally a few special things should be taken into consideration.
  1. Do Not Overfeed

    • The first thing to be aware of about Chinese Crested terriers is that they gain weight easily. It is important to check the food labeling and feed the amount specified for their weight. You should also try to avoid high-carb foods. Try to stick to lean meats and complex carbohydrates like brown rice. Watch your dog's weight. It should not exceed 12 pounds. If your dog begins to weigh more than 12 pounds, it is time to put him or her on a diet.

Avoid Vitamin C Supplements and Citrus

    • Chinese Crested Terriers have especially sensitive kidneys, and therefore should avoid vitamin C supplements, as they can be too much for their kidneys to handle. Additionally, the ascorbic acid in citrus can also lead to complications and infections.

    Allergies and Healthy Skin

    • Some Chinese Cresteds are subject to allergies, especially on their skin. In addition, because they are hairless on much of their bodies, good skin care is as important as for humans. Wheat and corn should be avoided as many dogs are allergic to them, and they can also cause skin problems, such as pimples.

    A Balanced Diet

    • Overall, the most important consideration is that your dog gets a balanced diet, just like a human. In order to get a balance and a variety of foods, an organic commercial food combined with raw fruits and vegetables will provide a good balance of protein, complex carbohydrates, and fiber. If you find that your dog has food allergies or sensitivities, you may wish to move to a completely home-prepared diet consisting of chicken, brown rice, and mashed potatoes, along with dry food and raw fruits and vegetables. Chinese Cresteds should eat three times a day, or four if they are puppies.
