Things You'll Need
- - Organic soy milk
- - Feeding bottle (4- to 8-ounce bottle) or feeding tube
Instructions
Make sure the soy milk you use has no added sugar in the ingredients. Sugar is not beneficial for a puppy.
Heat the organic soy milk on the stove. Do not allow the milk to boil; it only needs to be warmed. The amount of milk to use greatly depends on the size and weight of the puppy. See Resources ''Leerburg - Bottle Feeding Puppies'' for a chart that might help determine the amount of milk (or formula) to feed your puppy.
Grab a clean feeding bottle and fill it up with the warm soy milk.
Make a small hole on the feeding bottle's nipple. Use a hot needle if necessary. Make sure the hole is not too big; when holding the feeding bottle upside down, the milk should drip out gently, not flow out of the nipple in a stream. A malfunctioning nipple could cause a puppy to inhale milk into its lungs and get pneumonia as a consequence.
Put your puppy in a warm blanket or grab him with one hand close to your chest to keep him warm while feeding.
Grab the feeding bottle on the other hand and put the bottle's nipple close to the puppy's snout. When the puppy has grabbed the nipple, hold the feeding bottle on an a slight angle to allow the milk to go down into the nipple.
Make sure the milk is not pouring out of the puppy's mouth. Seeing bubbles of milk around his lips is a sign of correct feeding.
Burp your puppy after every feeding. This will help reduce any gas he may have. You will be able to tell when the puppy has had enough milk, judging by the size of his belly after every burping.
