How to Make a Dog Food Dispenser Using Household Items for the Project

An automatic dog food dispenser keeps you from having to worry about forgetting to feed the dog. As long as the storage portion of the dispenser has food in it, the dog will have something to eat, so you only need to make sure the dispenser is filled. Buying an automatic dispenser can be an expense that some dog owners can't afford; however, you can make your own with a few household items that can be found around your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic gallon jug

Instructions

    • 1

Wash out the gallon jug well to remove any residue from its original contents. Keep the lid to the jug and wash that as well.

    • 2

Cut a slit into the bottom of the jug furthest from the lid. The slit should be at least 1/2 inch wide and 3 to 4 inches long to keep the food flowing well. If your dog's food is chunkier than average, you may need a wider slit.

    • 3

Glue the jug to a block of wood that elevates the slit in the jug to the level of the rim of the dog dish.

    • 4

Position the jug on its block of wood immediately next to the dog's food bowl.

    • 5

Fill the jug with dog food through the mouth of the jug and replace the cap. The food will flow into the bowl until it is full. When the dog eats, the food is replaced out of the dispenser.
