How to Make Food at Home for a Bulldog

Homemade dog food can provide a fresh alternative to commercially available pre-packaged foods for your bulldog. By making meals of lean meats and vegetables in your own kitchen, you can cut out the amount of additives, chemicals, and unnecessary fats your dog consumes. Bulldogs are heavy-bodied, medium-sized and athletic, and need to get plenty of protein in their diet. It is also important that nutrients and vitamins are included to give them the proper balance. When feeding bulldogs at home, it is most important that they get the proper nutrients, not necessarily specific ingredients.

Include protein-rich foods. Chicken, eggs, lamb, beef and fish are all high in protein and have less fat than meats such as pork. Combine two parts of these meats with one part vegetables and carbohydrates. Rice, potatoes and pasta work well as carbohydrate choices.

Include vegetables. Most vegetables are safe for dogs to eat and, when mixed with meats and carbohydrates, are eaten readily by bulldogs. They not only provide vitamins and nutrients to your dog's diet, but also helpful antioxidants. They can be offered fresh, but many dogs digest them more easily if they are cooked first.

Include vitamins. Pre-packaged foods are nutritionally balanced to provide all of the vitamins and nutrients that a bulldog needs. If you are making them food at home, you may need to add in some of these things that aren't found in the meats, vegetables and carbohydrates you are using, or only found in small amounts. Vitamin A assists in bone growth, Thiamine is needed for a healthy heart, and Vitamin B12 is important for forming blood cells.
