Renal Diet for Dogs

A dog can develop kidney problems. These can be the result of poisons in the environment, drugs, diabetes, infections, cancer, genetics, and leptospirosis---an infectious disease spread by the urine of animals. But there are diets which can promote kidney health and help ease the symptoms of kidney disease.
  1. Symptoms Of Renal Failure

    • Symptoms indicative of renal disease in dogs include lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, frequent urination, extreme thirst, urine leakage, muscle weakness, urine that is light in color, weight loss, too much protein in the urine and elevated blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels.

    Benefits of Renal Diets

    • To control the symptoms of kidney disease in dogs, put them on a low protein diet. This should lower the manufacture of uremic toxins. Diets that are low in protein can help to lengthen the life of a dog suffering from kidney disease.

Cutting down on the dogs' phosphorus diet should also help. High phosphorus levels can hasten kidney failure.
