Homemade Dog Feeder

Making a homemade dog feeder can help you recycle old materials that you no longer use. A homemade dog feeder has more character than one you can buy in the store. It is also a creative exercise.Making your own feeder provides you with a creative project to do with your children, as well as a fun way to feed your dog. A homemade dog feeder dispenses food while you are away.
  1. Feeder

    • In order to provide your dog with extra food while you are gone, create a dog food feeder with some supplies that you can find at home. Find a 2-liter bottle and wash it out. Remove any plastic or paper labeling. With a sharp scissors, make a diagonal cut in the top of the bottle, so there is a 1-inch slit near the top. Open the lid of the bottle, and fill it with dog food. Do not fill it above the slit that you have made in the bottle.

    Tray

    • Your feeder will need a tray to catch the food. This will also provide your dog with a place to eat, and a place for the food to stay when he isn't eating it. Find a flat tray that you can use for the bottom of the dog feeder. A narrow and flat bowl works, as does a rectangular plastic food-storage vessel. The tray should not be deeper than 2 inches, and must be longer and wider than the 2-liter bottle.

Invert the feeder into the tray. As the food pours out, it should form a mound that will support the 2-litter bottle in the upside-down position. Some feeders might need to be balanced against a wall, or attached to the tray with string or tape.

    Decoration

    • When you are creating a homemade dog feeder, part of the fun is making it into something that is uniquely yours. As an art project or a fun activity with your kids, decorating is important. If you decide to decorate your homemade dog feeder, be sure to use non-toxic paint, or another material that is not going to harm your dog if it chews on it. The covering that you use should also not damage the food in any way.

Other ways to decorate your homemade dog feeder include covering it with fabric or felt, or drawing on it with safe and washable, non-toxic markers.
