How to Make Dry Dog Food

Making homemade dry dog food puts you in control over what your loyal companion consumes. You can feel good knowing you feed your dog preservative-free, nutritional food. Before you make your dog's food, you need to know what your dog's dietary needs are. Canines, like people, are omnivorous carnivores, which means they eat not only meat but grains and vegetables (think grass). You will need to include high-quality protein, vegetables and grains in your dry dog food recipe. Although some dogs will eat just about anything, the food must taste good for them to eat it.

Instructions

    • 1

In a cup or small bowl, dissolve one teaspoon of yeast into one cup of warm water and stir.

    • 2

Crack the eggs into a large bowl. Beat eggs with a wire whisk or fork for three minutes.

    • 3

Mix the wheat germ, white flour, garlic powder, ground beef, powdered milk and whole wheat flour into the eggs. Add the dissolved yeast to the mixture and stir.

    • 4

Knead the mixture in the bowl with your hands until it is thoroughly mixed. If it is too dry to combine all ingredients into a moist, chunky substance you may add water.

    • 5

Set the bowl aside for a half hour to allow the yeast to rise.

    • 6

Flour a large area on a clean counter. Break the dog food dough into sections and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough one section at a time.

    • 7

Cut the dough into small pieces with a knife and place onto a cookie sheet.

    • 8

Bake dog food bits at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes.

    • 9

Place dog food bits on wax paper to cool before feeding to your dog.

    • 10

Store leftover dry dog food in an airtight container.
