Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipe

Pumpkin is a great source of fiber. Most dogs will readily eat canned pumpkin, but it can be messy, inconvenient and isn't a practical take-along treat on outings. These easy to make whole wheat pumpkin dog biscuits with oatmeal are the perfect way to give your dog a healthy snack featuring beneficial pumpkin fiber.
  1. Prepare

    • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In large bowl, mix together 2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1/4 cup nonfat dry milk and 1 teaspoon baking powder. In separate bowl mix 1 cup canned pumpkin, 1 egg and 1/4 cup loosely packed brown sugar. When well blended, add to dry ingredients and stir by hand until dough forms, then hand knead into a large ball.

    Form

    • Pull off the amount of dough you would like the treat size to be and roll into balls. Two inch diameter balls work well for most sized dogs, one inch diameter balls for smaller dogs. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with a little flour. Place balls on cookie sheet and press flat with fork, crisscrossing horizontally and vertically until cookies are uniform in thickness. Bake for 25 to 35 minutes or until golden brown on the bottom. Let cool completely before giving to your dog.

    Tips

    • Store treats in an air-tight container, refrigerator or freezer. For an alternative cool treat on a hot summer day, form dough into cookie shapes and freeze instead of baking. If you are concerned about calorie content, substitute 1/3 cup nonfat dry milk for the brown sugar.
