Fruit Allergies in Dogs

Fido might make a perfect pet, but that doesn't mean he can munch on the same foods as his owners. In fact, a lot of foods humans need for their diet will cause an allergic reaction in dogs. Here are some of the fruits you need to keep away from your dog, and some of the signs of an allergic reaction.
  1. Fruits to Avoid

    • Dogs should never eat:

      Prunes
      Grapes
      Raisins
      Citrus fruits
      Seeds, stems or leaves of apples
      Peaches
      Plums
      Apricots
      Pears
      Cherries

      Especially dangerous are apple seeds and pits from cherries, peaches, pears, plums and apricots. These fruits are poisonous because they contain cyanide.

    Some Fruits Are Fine for Dogs.

    • It is perfectly fine to feed blueberries, apple wedges, melons and bananas to dogs. Blueberries are especially healthy treats.

    Are Grapes and Raisins Really That Bad?

    • One of the worst results of a dog's fruit allergies is kidney failure. Grapes and raisins have been proven to cause kidney failure in dogs that have in ingested only 2 to 4 ozs. Even one grape is too many.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Allergic reactions can vary and include vomiting, itching, diarrhea, tremors and heart arrhythmia.

    • If you aren't sure whether a certain fruit or another food can be fed to your dog, it is usually fine to gradually introduce an item and watch the results closely. It also can be a good idea to call your veterinarian to double-check. Generally, you should stick to feeding your dog food that is specially formulated to meet canine nutrient requirements.
