Foods Not to Give Your Dog

A lot of foods humans eat are not good for us, let alone our dogs. You might be surprised to learn that even some foods that are healthy for people can be dangerous for our animals.
  1. Poisonous Junk Food

    • Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine and in large doses. It can cause tremors and heart arrhythmia. Ice cream, candy, cake and cookies can cause a dog to vomit and have diarrhea.

Healthy for Us but Not Our Dogs

    • Tomatoes, their leaves and tops contain atropine and can give your dog tremors, heart arrhythmia and dilated pupils. Onions and garlic, in large amounts, can cause hemolytic anemia.

    Enemy Fruit

    • Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Fruit pits and cores can contain amygdalin, a cyanide and sugar compound, and can also cause digestive tract obstructions.

    Nut Warning

    • Macadamia nuts can cause temporary paralysis in dogs for unknown reasons. As little as 1 ounce can affect a 20-pound dog.

    More Bad Choices

    • Never give a dog alcohol. It can cause weakness, staggering or even death. Caffeine can cause heart arrhythmia, tremors or seizures. Fried foods can cause severe pancreatitis and vomiting.

    Considerations

    • Food that has been sitting in your refrigerator too long is not safe for your dog because moldy or slightly spoiled food can cause vomiting, diarrhea and even death.
