What to Feed a Lactating Dog

After whelping, female dogs need extra calories for stamina in taking care of their new puppies. A lactating dog should be fed two to four times what she normally eats, depending on the size of the litter and their ages.
  1. Significance

    • Feeding a high protein diet along with fat will help a lactating dog keep up her strength and promote lactation.

    Types

    • Some foods to feed a lactating female include her regular kibble; meat, such as liver or cubed beef; egg yolks, or whole cooked eggs; vitamins and milk replacement.

    Extra Protein

    • Extra protein is required in your dog's diet, such as liver or cheeses. Cottage cheese is a great additive to your dog's diet to prevent diarrhea.

    Considerations

    • Having extra water and some electrolytes on hand will help keep her hydrated for better milk production. Water should always be available for your dog.

    Warning

    • An inadequate diet can cut down on a dog's milk production, thus forcing her body to compensate in feeding her puppies.
