How to Make Diet Dog Treats

Making your own diet dog treats offers several advantages. You always know exactly what's in them and how fresh they are. You will also spend a lot less money to make treats for your best friend than you will if you purchase commercially prepared goodies. These low fat chicken and bean cookies are high in fiber and in taste. Quick and easy to make, this recipe will yield about 30 to 35 diet dog treats. They're great for dieting pooches, as well as for couch potatoes.

  • 3 1/2 cups of finely ground whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of cornmeal
  • ¾ cup chicken stock
  • ¼ cup skim milk
  • ½ cup green bean baby food or pureed green beans

      Combine the cornmeal and flour in a mixing bowl and set it aside.

      Whisk the chicken stock, skim milk and green bean puree together in a large mixing bowl.

      Add the flour mixture to the liquid ingredients a little at a time, blending well following each addition. Continue mixing in the dry mixture until a stiff dough forms.

      Flour a flat working surface and set the dough onto it. Roll the dough out to about an inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes and place them on an ungreased pan or cookie sheet.

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake the diet dog treats for about 35 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly browned and crispy.
