What Human Foods Are Healthy for Dogs?

While the best diet for your dog consists of a high quality dog food and the occasional dog treat, there are some human foods that are alright for your pet. Keep in mind that these treats should be used in moderation. Most vets recommend that human foods make up no more than 5 to 10 percent of a dog's diet. Always consult your veterinarian before you make any major change to your pet's diet.
  1. Raw Food Diet

    • Some people advocate feeding a diet composed entirely of raw meats, fruits and vegetables to their dogs. However, many others believe this is not a healthy alternative.

    Carbohydrates

    • Rice, bread and potatoes easily mix with existing dog food to add a touch of variety to your dog's diet.

    Dairy

    • Cottage cheese and plain yogurt are safe for dogs to add to their diet.

    Treats

    • Many dogs enjoy a little peanut butter as a treat. Avoid sweets such as chocolate, which is toxic to dogs.

    Meat

    • When feeding your dog cooked meat, remove the soft, cooked bones which can easily splinter.

    Toxic Foods

    • Onions, avocados and grapes are dangerous for dogs.
