You can combat this situation by preparing your own much healthier alternative, with the peace of mind that comes from knowing exactly what's going into it. This is a very easy diet for otherwise healthy dogs that have canine seizures. It is very balanced, contains no preservatives or artificial sweeteners, and is simple to make. Be sure to use fresh vegetables rather than canned or frozen for the highest nutritional levels. Choose chicken, fish or ground beef, or a combination of one or more of the meats. This recipe will give you 8 to 10 cups of fresh dog food, and you only need to make it once a week.
Things You'll Need
- 4 cups of cooked ground beef, fish or chicken 1 cup of carrots 1 cup of summer squash or zucchini 1 cup of celery 1 cup of string beans ½ cup of yams or sweet potatoes ½ cup of white or red potatoes Paper towels Colander Plastic zip-top bags Plastic food storage containers with lids
Instructions
Choose and Prepare a Meat
Brown ground beef in a skillet with no added oil. Drain on paper towels. If your pet is sensitive to fats, place the cooked beef in a colander and rinse it well under hot running water. Set this aside.
Poach fish with a small amount of water in a skillet over medium heat. Turn it once, and cook it until the flesh is white and flakes easily with a fork. Drain the fish on paper towels. Finely flake all of the cooked fish and set it aside.
Skin the chicken and cut it into parts if necessary. Cover it with water in a large pot. Bring the pot to a boil, cover the pot and simmer until the chicken is completely cooked. Drain it in a colander and reserve the broth. Finely chop the cooked chicken.
Split the chicken broth into two batches. Keep one batch in the refrigerator in a covered container for the first several days, and add some of it to your dog's meals when you feed. Freeze the second batch of broth in a covered container. Thaw it and use it to flavor your pet's meals for the remainder of the week.
Preparation
Wash all of the vegetables very well. Cut them into pieces that are appropriate for your dog's size.
Cover the squash and potatoes with water in a large pot, and cook them until they are very tender. You'll want to prepare these separately from the other vegetables due to differences in required cooking times. Drain them in a colander and set aside.
Cover the carrots, celery, green beans and sweet potatoes or yams with water in another large pot, and cook them until they're tender. Drain in the colander and set aside.
Mix all of the ingredients together very well in a large bowl. Store enough for three to four days in a covered container in the refrigerator.
Divide the remainder of the dog food into meal-size portions, and put each portion into a separate plastic zip-top bag. Freeze these for the latter part of the week. Remove them the day before you plan to use them, and put them into the refrigerator where they'll thaw in time to use the following day.
