Things You'll Need
- Ice cube trays
- Low-sodium beef or chicken bouillon
- Plain yogurt
- Peanut butter
- Carrots
- Rolled oats
- Bananas
- Apple juice
- Cottage cheese
Instructions
Dissolve a bouillon cube in several cups of water, then put the mixture in ice cube trays in the freezer. Let sit until frozen. Not only will your dog enjoy the refreshing treat, but the salt in the bouillon will replenish its electrolytes on hot summer days.
Take a container of plain yogurt and fill an ice cube tray. Put the tray in the freezer overnight. Once the yogurt is frozen, paint the top with a layer of peanut butter. Replace the tray in the freezer, and serve cold.
Mix a banana, several shredded carrots and a cup of apple juice with enough plain rolled oats to bind the treat together into a dough. Form the dough into balls, and flatten onto a cookie sheet treated with a non-stick spray. Bake for 25-30 minutes in a 350 degree oven, leaving them in for closer to 30 minutes if your dog prefers crunchy treats to soft. These will be low-fat and good for dogs that are watching their weight.
Cut a large carrot into quarters. Paint on some peanut butter for a tasty and truly easy-to-make snack that has all the health benefits of carrots with the taste of peanut butter.
Fill an ice cube tray two thirds of the way with cottage cheese, and put it in the freezer. Once the cottage cheese is firm, fill the rest of the tray with apple juice. Re-freeze and offer as a frozen treat.
Take a pre-made pizza crust, and flatten it until very thin. Take pieces of your dog's favorite meat, cooked and cooled -- ground beef, chicken or turkey all work. Place small pieces of meat on the top of the pizza crust and cover with another crust rolled out to the same thickness. Pinch the crusts together between the pieces of meat and cut the meat-filled treats into pieces. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes in a 375-degree F oven.
Based on your dog's tastes, you can also add carrots or other types of vegetables as filling.
