How to Avoid Foods Poisonous to Pets

If your pets nose around you at the dinner table, be wary of passing them food from your plate. Certain foods are known to be harmful to dogs and cats, resulting in illness and even death. Protect your pet's health by acquainting yourself with potentially poisonous foods .

      Do not feed chocolate to your pets. Exposure to substances in chocolate called methylxanthines can result in diarrhea, excess urination, nausea, seizures, irregular heartbeat or coma.

      Keep pets away from avocados. All parts of the avocado can cause gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, congestion, and fluid accumulation around the heart. Call a vet or poison hotline right away if your pet consumes avocado.

      Avoid exposing your pet to macadamia nuts, which are often incorporated into baked goods. These nuts may cause weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors and hyperthermia in dogs.

      Don't give raisins or grapes to your dog or cat. An unknown toxin in the grape's flesh causes kidney problems in pets. Vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite, lethargy or abdominal pain are possible symptoms.

      Keep pets away from onion and garlic,which can poison cats and dogs through ingestion or skin exposure. This includes all stem, bulb, and flower parts. Exposure can cause gastrointestinal irritation and lead to red blood cell damage.
