How to Make Your Own Homemade Dog Treats

Baking for your four-footed friend is not any harder than baking for yourself or your kids. All it takes is a little imagination, some time and a few very basic ingredients. Be aware of any food allergies your pet (or the pet for whom you are baking) may have. Homemade dog treats make great gifts for that "friend who has everything" because it shows you are fond enough of their puppy to put some time and effort into the gift.

Instructions

  1. Basic Dog Biscuits

    • 1

Assemble your ingredients and supplies. For basic dog biscuits, you should have:

      3 cups wheat flour
      2 teaspoons dry yeast
      1 beaten egg
1 1/2 cups of broth (chicken, beef or vegetable, your choice)
      1/2 cup warm water

    • 2

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water, then add the beaten egg and the broth. If you want to add any special flavoring, such as garlic, peanut butter or carob, now is the time to do so. Gradually add the flour, mixing it in until you have a firm dough.

    • 3

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until it is smooth. If you are using a rolling pin and cookie cutters, roll the dough onto the floured surface and roll about 1/2-inch thick (use a little olive oil to stop the rolling pin from sticking). Using a cookie cutter, or the rim of a glass for uniformity, cut out each biscuit. If you are not using a cookie cutter, break off uniform pieces of the dough and drop them onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Place the cookies in the oven for 30 minutes. Turn the oven off and allow the cookies to stay in the oven overnight so they become crunchy.

This is a very basic recipe. You can add can pumpkin, carob flavoring, peanut butter, garlic flakes, canned or cut-up apples, cheese or any other dog-friendly combination of foods and flavors. These biscuits should be kept in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

    Frozen Treats

    • 4

Combine overripe bananas, yogurt and any flavoring such as canned pumpkin, bits of canned dog food or peanut butter. Simply add a cup of creamy or crunchy peanut butter to two overripe bananas and a 32-ounce container of yogurt. You can use plain or vanilla-flavored yogurt.

    • 5

Mix well and pour the mixture into 3-ounce paper cups. Place the paper cups in the freezer until hardened.

You also can use beef or chicken broth to make popsicles.

    • 6

To feed it to your dog, simply tear off the paper cups and place the frozen treat in your dog's bowl.

    Birthday Cake

    • 7

Treat your dog on her birthday by baking a birthday treat she will love!

      Ingredients:

1 cup flour (white or whole wheat)
      1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 cup of peanut butter, canned pumpkin or canned dog food
      1/4 cup of vegetable oil
1 cup shredded carrots, zucchini, mashed banana or apples
      1 egg

    • 8

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix dry ingredients, then add the remaining ingredients. Beat until smooth, then pour into a greased bundt cake pan or ring mold. Bake until toothpick comes out clean, about 30 to 40 minutes.

    • 9

Frost when cool using a frosting made of cream or cottage cheese mixed with carob, banana or peanut butter. Simply bring cream or cottage cheese to room temperature and add the bananas, carob or peanut butter until the mixture is spreadable. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring for an extra-special surprise. Use regular tube-gel to write the dog's name, if desired.
