How to Grind Ingredients When Making Dog Food

Grinding homemade dog food is the best way to ensure your dog is eating healthy. Dogs have a short digestive tract and grinding food makes it easier for them to digest it. Grinding the food is easy to do--all you need is a reliable grinder, and, of course, food to grind.

Instructions

    • 1

Place vegetables in the grinder. Be sure to use vegetables that your dog can easily digest and is comfortable eating. Do not grind onions, as they are harmful to dogs.

    • 2

Cut fruit into pieces small enough to fit into the mouth of the grinder. It is not necessary to remove small seeds. The grinding process pulverizes the seeds.

    • 3

Add meat to the mixture. The piece de resistance for any dog is the meat. Be sure your grinder can handle small bones such as those found in chicken necks. If it cannot, then use boneless meat. Bones that are not properly ground can cause internal injury to the dog.

    • 4

Mix newly ground food with existing dry dog food to stretch the meal. If the meal is too loose or watery, add oatmeal or rice to thicken the consistency.
