Use protein sources that you would use in your regular diet, but stay away from bean sources of protein such as soy and pork, as they can be difficult for your dog to digest. Try to pick the freshest protein sources available, relying on canned foods only occasionally.
Choose poultry, one of the best and healthiest forms of protein for your dog's food. You can cook turkey, chicken or other poultry products and use the broth to make gravies for wet dog food as well. Make sure that you remove all of the bones from poultry, as the light-weight hollow bones sliver easily and can hurt your dog.
Add red meats to the dog food, such as beef, lamb, venison or even buffalo. Red meat is a great source of protein for your dog; however, should it not be the sole source as it is high in fat. Try to limit red meats to one meal a day. Bones from red meat sources are acceptable for your dog as a treat, as long as they are boiled first.
Mix in a bit of fresh cooked or canned fish to your dog's food for an extremely healthy boost of protein. Fish is rich in omega oils and is thought to help with cardiovascular health as well as improve the skin and coat. Fish should be included in your dog's meals at least 3 or 4 times a week.
Make dog food using protein sources such as eggs and cheese to add a bit more variety to your dog's diet. Remember that eggs are high in cholesterol and cheese is high in fat, so these protein sources should not be used daily; however, a doggie omelette is a fantastic treat for your best friend.
