Are Mint Leaves Bad for Dogs?

It's nice to walk out your door and pluck off a few leaves of your favorite fresh herbs. Your dog also may be interested in your herb garden, taking a nip here and a nosh there. If he tasted some of your mint leaves, don't worry. They aren't bad for dogs. In fact, a bit of mint can have some good health benefits for your pup.

  1. Healthy, Refreshing Mint

    • Including peppermint or spearmint in your herb garden can provide a host of benefits: Mint is a natural flea repellent, makes a great breath freshener and in small amounts, is good for your dog. Feel free to mince a couple of leaves and sprinkle them into his food -- mint inhibits bacteria growth in his mouth. As well, it can settle an upset tummy and help with travel sickness. Make sure to limit your dog to just a couple of leaves, because too much mint at once may lead to liver or kidney problems. If your dog made himself at home in your mint patch, he'll likely be fine, however give the vet a call to learn what signs of overindulgence you should be on the lookout for.
