What is cat nip?

Catnip is a herb from the mint family (Lamiaceae). It's scientifically known as Nepeta cataria.

Here's what makes it special:

* Active Ingredient: Catnip contains a chemical called nepetalactone. When cats smell it, it triggers a reaction in their olfactory system.

* Behavioral Effects: The reaction to nepetalactone is a strong attractant for most cats. It causes them to exhibit playful, frisky, and sometimes even euphoric behavior.

* Not all cats react: About 30% of cats don't react to catnip, either due to genetics or age.

* Temporary effect: The effects of catnip are short-lived, usually lasting for about 5-15 minutes.

* Safe for cats: While cats can get "high" on catnip, it's non-addictive and harmless in moderate amounts.

Uses of catnip:

* Toy and treat: Catnip is often used in toys and treats to entice cats to play.

* Training aid: It can be helpful in training cats to use scratching posts or other desired behaviors.

* Stress relief: Some cats may find catnip relaxing and helpful in reducing stress.

Note: Catnip is not meant for humans. It can cause mild digestive upset or allergic reactions in some people.
