Where were cats originally from?

Cats are believed to have originated in Northeast Africa and the Middle East, specifically in the fertile crescent region.

The wild ancestor of the domestic cat is the African wildcat (Felis silvestris lybica), which still exists in that region today.

Over time, these wildcats gradually became domesticated through a process called mutualism, where humans benefited from the cats' ability to control rodent populations, and the cats benefited from a reliable food source and shelter provided by humans.
