How to Keep a Cat From Hiding Under the Bed

Cats dive under beds because the cramped location feels like a safe den when they are scared. They are not running away from us as much as they are trying to avoid whatever it is that is frightening them.

Instructions

    • 1

Block access to the area under the bed. Use sturdy materials, such as plywood, so that the cat cannot wiggle under or around these objects.

    • 2

Provide an alternate hiding place that is acceptable to you and the cat. Lay a cardboard box on its side with one end open to make an attractive, den-like environment; place it in the corner of the living room where the cat will have a clear view of everyone and inevitably interact with those living in the home.

    • 3

Encourage the cat out of hiding by providing food and water at the same time each day in the same location. Give treats at another time. This consistency provides stability and, in turn, eliminates the fear that is causing the cat to hide.

    • 4

Be predictable in your movements around the house. Remove your socks, allowing your scent to absorb into carpets from where the cat will learn to identify your smell.

    • 5

Place lemon or citrus scents on the floor around your bed. These scents repel cats.
