How to Keep a Kitten From Under the Beds

A little kitten may be drawn to dark areas in the house where it feels cozy and secluded. The space under the bed is prime real estate for a kitten because it provides shelter and is easily accessed. However, it is not easy to get a kitten out from under the bed once it finds its way there, nor is the space safe for a small kitten. For maximum safety, take preventative measures to keep your kitten from going underneath the bed.

Keep the doors to the bedrooms closed. When you need to access the bedroom, close the door immediately behind you. Dedicate an area of the house where the kitten is allowed to roam, but make the bedrooms off limits. If the kitten cannot access the room, it can't hide under the bed.

Remove the bed frame. Allow the box spring and mattress to lay flush against the floor. This eliminates the opening beneath the bed so that there is nowhere for the kitten to go.

    • 3

Block off the space under the bed with storage items, such as plastic or canvas bins so the kitten will not be able to get through. Line the perimeter of the bed with storage items so that the kitten does not find a squeeze-through spot.

Spray bitters around the perimeter of the beds. Kittens do not like the taste or smell of bitters, which is a pet-friendly spray that helps people train pets to refrain from chewing or accessing certain things. The bitters spray can deter the kitten from wanting to go under the bed.

Give the kitten a special place to hide, such as a kitten igloo, which offers the same dark comfort as the space under the bed. The igloo, or a little hut, is made out of soft material and is a safe area for the kitten to hang out.
