How to Get a Frightened Cat Out of the Garage

If a cat has taken up residency in the garage, it may be difficult to keep it from coming back if he can gain access. Unlike lost house cats, feral cats are usually fearful of people and will rarely allow someone to pick them up, much less come when called. The most effective way to remove the cat is to trap it.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a live-cat trap from a local animal rescue group or shelter.

    • 2

Determine how the cat is gaining access to the garage and block all possible entrances to the garage. This will keep the cat from sneaking out the back only to come back later.

    • 3

Do not feed or water the cat for 36 hours.

    • 4

Place the live-pet trap in a location where the cat has easy access; place a plastic dish of mashed-up salmon inside the pet trap and set the trap so that it will keep the cat from escaping once it is inside.

    • 5

Determine if the cat has any identification. If so, contact the owner. If not, contact the animal rescue or shelter site and give them the feral cat.
