How to Cat-Proof an Apartment

A cat is a curious creature, and once you bring one home to your apartment, it'll play with anything that catches its fancy. While nothing drastic is required, there are guidelines you can follow to ensure that both your cat and your apartment are safe when left alone together. Having to cat-proof your apartment seems almost amusing, but it can make a huge difference in protecting your favorite items from breakage, in reducing the risk of a house fire -- and in keeping your cat from harm.

Instructions

    • 1

Double-check all screens to make sure they're secured. Cats especially love to perch on windows, and can easily fall through a loose screen.

    • 2

Remove all houseplants that are harmful or poisonous to cats. These include lilies, holly berries, mistletoe, hibiscus flowers and nightshade.

    • 3

Bind together any loose electrical wires using twist ties. This should discourage your cat from playing with or chewing them, which can cause a house fire or electrocute your cat.

    • 4

Put away any items that are small and could be swallowed. Pushpins, paper clips, coins and tiny children's toys should be kept from your cat, who can choke on them.

    • 5

Place skid-proof adhesives on the bottom of any items displayed on shelves or tables. Cats love to knock items off things, but if the items don't slide easily, they'll most likely leave them alone.

    • 6

Set up a cat condo and scratching posts. This way, the cat has things it can tear into without getting in trouble.

    • 7

Spritz some pet-repellent spray on the corners of any furniture that the cat claws at.
