Instructions
Feed and shelter the kittens properly. Even though you will be taking the kittens to a shelter, you will need to take care of them until you do.
Locate your local animal shelter online or in the phone book. A simple Internet search of "animal shelters in your city" or "animal shelters" in your phone book will turn up a list.
Call the potential shelter and ask if it has space available for your cat. Some shelters simply do not have the room to take more animals, so it's important to always check before attempting to drop off your cat at one of the shelters.
Ask the shelter what its adoption rate is and how long it waits before euthanizing. Some shelters are labeled as "high kill" shelters and will euthanize the cat within days if it is not adopted. You can possibly find a shelter that will give your cat a longer lease on life if not adopted right away.
Drop by the shelter you have chosen. If it is dirty or the animals look abused or neglected, it probably won't be a good environment for your cat. Animal shelters should take care of the animals there, not leave them unattended and uncared for. If the shelter meets your standards, make an appointment to bring back the kittens at a later time.
Write down all shots and vaccinations your kittens have had, as well as any physical problems you have witnessed. You should provide the shelter with as much information on the kittens as possible to ensure their needs are met.
Place the kittens in a towel-lined basket or box for easy transportation and deliver them to the shelter.
How to Take Kittens to a Shelter
The inability to keep an animal can be a tough scenario for any animal lover, especially when setting the pet loose in the streets just isn't an option. Fortunately, you can always take a cat to a shelter, where it will have the opportunity to be adopted by a loving family. Kittens, especially, will have a good chance of being adopted because they are young. If this is the route you choose, then you will need to do your research to select the shelter that will be the best for the kittens.
