How to Subdue a Cat by His Neck

Cats are notoriously finicky when handled, especially if they have to be groomed, have their nails trimmed or be put into a cage. A trick that works on many cats is to subdue them by the neck, which is believed to release endorphins and naturally cause a calming sensation. Proper handling makes the experience less stressful for the cat, and almost as importantly, prevents an arm full of cat scratches. Act quickly as the effects may wear off in a short time.

Instructions

    • 1

Confine the cat in one room and close the door.

    • 2

Approach the cat in a slow, calm manner. Do not act aggressive or nervous as the cat may pick up on the emotions and become stressed, which in turn can result is scratches or the need to chase the cat around the room.

    • 3

Drape a towel over the cat's head. Cats may become less stressed if they cannot see what's going on around them. Grab the cat at the scruff of the neck through the towel, right above its shoulders. Grab as much loose skin as possible and hold it firmly.

    • 4

Grab the cat's two back legs with the other hand to prevent kicking.

    • 5

Lay the cat down on its side and let go with both hands when you are ready to set it free.
