How to Tell if a Kitten is Abandoned

Spotting a kitten alone on the street looking lost and hungry will tug at your heart strings. Animal lovers often rescue kittens and are faced with the task of finding out if it is a family pet that is missing or an unwanted animal that has been abandoned. Resources exist to help you determine the answer.

Instructions

Ask around the area. Check with homes and businesses in the vicinity of where you spotted the kitten to find out if anyone knows if it has a home. Never go door to door alone.

    • 2

Post fliers. Take a photo of the kitten and make fliers asking if anyone has lost a kitten. Include contact information such as a phone number or email address. Ask area businesses to allow you to display fliers and leave some in public areas where permissible.

Run a classified ad. Contact a local newspaper to run a classified ad in the missing pets section. To prevent the unscrupulous from claiming the kitten for less than humane purposes, give some details, but ask the owner to call and identify to claim the kitten.

Contact animal control. When someone has lost a pet, one of the first places contacted is local animal control to see if the pet has been picked up and taken to the pound. Alert animal control that you have found a kitten and inquire if anyone in the area is searching for one. Check with other animal rescue organizations in the community to learn if calls have been received about a missing kitten. Some animal service agencies will check to see if the kitten has been microchipped with owner identification.
