How to Introduce Older Big Puppies to a Tiny Kitten

If you are planning to have puppies and kittens in your home, it is essential to the animals' safety to introduce them correctly. Puppies tend to be larger than kittens, and rough play or aggressive behavior can cause injury to one or both animals. Allow them to slowly become accustomed to one another. Early introductions are a good way to cement a peaceful relationship between your pets.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a room for the kitten to stay in. Inside the room, place food and water dishes, a litter pan, a blanket for the kitten to sleep on, and cat toys for the kitten to play with.

    • 2

Set up a baby gate across a room that you have prepared for the kitten.

    • 3

Put your puppy on a leash and walk it by the baby gate, allowing it to stop and look at the kitten inside.

    • 4

Hold the leash firmly so that the puppy cannot lunge at the kitten.

    • 5

Tell the puppy "no" firmly if it starts to bark or lunge at the kitten.

    • 6

Repeat steps 3 through 5 every day until the kitten and the puppy are used to each other.

    • 7

Remove the baby gate, but leave the puppy on the lead.

    • 8

Allow the kitten and puppy to spend incrementally longer periods of time together while the puppy is on the lead.

    • 9

Allow the puppy and kitten to spend a small amount of time together off the lead but under close supervision.

    • 10

Continue to acclimatize the puppy and the kitten to each other until they are bored with one another and can be in the same room without antagonizing each other.
