How to Tell How Old My Kittens Are

Nothing is more engaging to a cat lover than a new litter of energetic kittens. The variety of colors and patterns is amazing, and it's fun to spend time watching them romp before choosing one or more to take home. Judging the age of a kitten is not all that difficult. Of course, if the kitten's eyes are beginning to open you know it is close to 10 days old. However, without knowing the actual date of birth, there are still a number of ways to determine the approximate age of your kitten.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold your kitten up and gaze into her eyes. If they are bluish, the kitten is under eight weeks old. However, if the eyes are another color, the kitten is probably around 10 to 12 weeks old. This method isn't perfect, but it's a pretty good way to approximate age.

    • 2

Open your kitten's mouth gently with your finger to look at her teeth. Teeth will begin to erupt at approximately two weeks of age. Older kittens that have their canine teeth, or fangs, are around six months of age.

    • 3

Look for the gender. It is very difficult to determine gender before the age of six weeks. If the kitten is older than six weeks, the gender will be easy to determine.

    • 4

Watch how your kitten moves. Very young kittens start learning to stand up and then walk at around two to three weeks of age.

    • 5

Watch your kitten's interaction with her environment. Kittens begin to respond to sounds and pay more attention to objects at around three weeks.
