How to Lure a Cat out of Hiding

As pet lovers the world over can attest, there are two kinds of people: cat people and dog people. Dog people deal with their slavering, too-adoring pets in constant need of walks and unending attention. Cat people go their own way, putting up with the hot-and-cold affection of their pets, cleaning their litter boxes and accepting that sometimes their cats may just disappear for a while. Whether they're feeling stressed, frightened or like they need a little "me time," cats are known to hide. However, there are ways to lure your cat out of hiding.

Quiet the house down and rid it of any loud or potentially frightening sounds. This is not the time to vacuum, shred unwanted documents or run the garbage disposal. If you have a dog, place him in his kennel or have someone take him on a walk. Focus on making the house as comfortable for your cat as possible.

Shake a container of your cat's treats. This works better if you have previously rattled a treats container to let your cat know that treat time is at hand. If your cat's treats are kept in a plastic bag, shake the bag loudly. Walk around the house, shaking and rattling your cat's treats bag or container. You may also want to gently call your cat or use the words you typically use to tell her that a treat is forthcoming. ("Muffin! Treat time!")

Jingle your cat's toys. Most cats have at least one toy that jingles. If your cat is not a fan of jingly toys, walk around the house fiddling with a favorite toy and tossing it a few feet every so often. Now might be a good time to refresh any catnip toys with some new catnip.

Meow. Your cat may be comforted by soft, gentle meows. If you feel silly pretending to be a cat, just speak in a soft, soothing voice as you walk around. Call sweetly to your cat; tell him everything is okay and let him know you are concerned.

Open a can of tuna or cat food. Many cats are notorious for appearing just as you open a can of tuna, hoping that you will share some with them. If your cat has another favorite food that inspires her to come around and rub against your legs, now is the time to indulge her. Scoop out some ice cream, pour a big glass of milk or order a batch of sushi. After all, it's worth it if it helps you find your beloved cat.

Give it time. When cats are frightened or stressed, they may instinctively feel the need to hide for hours at a time. While this can cause concern among their loving owners, it really is typical cat behavior. When your cat feels more comfortable, she will probably come out, none the worse for wear.
