How to Cover a Feral Cat Cooler With an Emergency Blanket

According to the Feral Cat Coalition, there are over 60 million stray cats in the United States. They have an average lifespan of three to five years, due to starvation, disease and dogs. If there is a feral cat population in your neighborhood, provide shelter for them in winter by cutting holes in the sides of Styrofoam coolers. These are cheap and keep the cats warm and out of the elements. Mylar emergency blankets provide extra protection from especially harsh winters.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the lid from the cooler. Cut a cat-sized hole -- about 8 inches in diameter -- in the side of the cooler, if there isn't one already.

    • 2

Place a layer of straw in the bottom for padding, if desired.

    • 3

Fold the emergency blanket into a rectangle slightly larger on all sides than the bottom of the cooler. Lay it on the straw or cooler bottom, and tuck it around the straw.
