Cats are content and observing noises around them when their ears are relaxed and pointed forward. When the ears are pointed forward, but more erect than normal, the cat is investigating a noise. Cats will flatten their ears sideways if they are nervous, anxious or scared. Cats exhibit anger and aggression by pointing their ears backward. When the ears are pointed backward and are flat, the cat is extremely angry or upset and might possibly attack.

A tail positioned straight up in the air signifies that a cat is proud and happy. When the tail is straight up in the air with a hooked tip, the cat is communicating he is friendly but weary of another person or animal. A cat's tail will quiver while straight up in the air when she is filled with good emotions, such as when she is happy to see her owner. A tail that is straight up in the air and puffed out indicates that a cat is seriously frightened, defensive or angry. A content and relaxed cat will position his tail horizontally behind him, or with a slight droop. Cats will quickly thrash their tails from side-to-side when they are annoyed.

A chirr is a sound made by cats that is a rolled version of a meow. Cats use this to call to kittens, and it is also a noise cats make when they are pleased to see their owners. Hissing is a communication indicator that cats are very upset and are warning you to move away. A low growl can also indicate that a cat wants to be left alone. A loud howl is a very distinctive noise made by cats when they are in heat or calling to a potential mate.
