How to Remove Cat Poop Odor

Cat poop can leave behind a nasty odor in your home. However, when you have a cat as a pet, particularly a very young or very old cat, you are bound to have to deal with this type of accident at some point. When it happens, it's important to remember not to yell at or punish your cat. This will not help to train your cat or correct the behavior. Cat poop odors can also come from the litter box if it's not maintained properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot up any moisture left behind from a cat poop accident. Press firmly with a wad of paper towels until no more moisture is being taken away.

    • 2

Spray on a liberal amount of neutralizing pet odor cleaner. This type of cleaner contains antimicrobial enzymes. Any other type of cleaner can actually encourage your cat to continue to defecate in the same area.

    • 3

Blot away the cleaner with more paper towels to remove the remaining germs and odor from your home.

    • 4

Sprinkle the bottom of your litter box with a small amount of baking soda. The baking soda will help to absorb cat poop odors. Never use products in or near the litter box that contains fragrances or chemicals because they can cause your cat to avoid the litter box.

    • 5

Use a fine-grained litter in your kitty litter box. This type of litter is more effective at reducing the cat poop smell.

    • 6

Scoop poop out of the litter at least once a day but more often if you have multiple cats. Replace the litter and scrub the box with mild soap and warm water about once a week.
