How to Travel With Pets in Airplane Cabins

Allowing pets to travel in the passenger cabin with their owners is up to the discretion of each airline. Airlines that allow pets must also follow certain Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules. These rules revolve mostly around the size of the pet and safety. Pets must be small enough to be considered carry-on luggage and must not be a danger or nuisance to the other passengers.

Instructions

Call the airline before traveling with your pet. Airlines that allow pets to travel in the cabin have specific rules and limitations such as pet size, type and keeping the pet contained at all times during the flight.

    • 2

Make an appointment with your veterinarian for a pet checkup. The FAA requires that you carry a pet health certificate with your pet while flying. If you think your pet will become nervous during the flight, you can ask your veterinarian to prescribe tranquilizers that will keep it calm.

Keep your pet contained in a pet carrier that is appropriate for its type and size. For example, a cat should be in a cat carrier and a bird in a bird carrier. The pet crate must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.
