How to Get Rid of Used Cat Litter

Cats are safest when they are kept inside, but that means you need to keep a litter box for them to use. Used cat litter requires proper disposal that depends on the type of litter. Clay-based cat litter should go in the trash, but certain types of ecologically friendly litter are suitable for composting or even flushing down the toilet. Check the bag or the manufacturer's website for disposal instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Don disposable gloves before handling the used cat litter.

    • 2

Use a litter scooper to dig through the litter in the litter box. The scooper allows unused litter to sift through the holes while keeping the clumps and solid waste inside the scoop.

    • 3

Transfer the waste into a plastic bag. Garbage bags work well, but you can use any type of plastic bag that's large enough. Be careful using grocery bags, because they often have holes in the bottom.

    • 4

Tie the bag shut and dispose of it and the disposable gloves in the garbage. Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer gel afterward to kill any disease-causing bacteria or parasites.
