Types
-
There are different types of growls. There are playful growls, scared growls and there are growls that let you know your kitten is in pain. It is important for cat owners to be able to interpret these growls.
Playful Growl
-
When you are playing a game with your kitten or when it is chasing one of its favorite toys, it will make a growling sound. This is its playful growl and means it is happy and content.
Scared Growl
-
When a kitten hisses or growls, it usually means it is scared. This type of growl is usually a low, eerie sound. You will hear it when your kitten is cornered or feels threatened. Take away the threat and let your kitten calm down before you try to pick it up. Otherwise, it might scratch you.
Painful Growl
-
When a kitten is hurt or in some kind of pain, it will growl at you if you try to pick it up. It is not doing it because it wants to hurt you, but because it does not want to be hurt any further. If you hear this growl, take your kitten to a veterinarian.

What Does a Kitten's Growling Mean?
Kittens communicate through a series of noises and through body language. Just like a human baby, kittens talk to us the only way they know how. It's then up to us to figure out what they are trying to tell us.
