Contact an association or club dedicated to your desired breed, such as the United Maine Coon Cat Association or the Ragdoll Fanciers Club International. Most associations and clubs have lists of breeders they either know of or recommend.
Ask your veterinarian about any kitten breeders in the area. Breeders often take kittens to vets for their vaccinations and wormings. Many build relationships with the vets. Ask your vet if she knows of kitten breeders who seem to produce healthy cats based on her experience with the breeder and kittens. Cat breeders will also advertise with veterinarians they do not work with. So call around to different offices for the names of kitten breeders.
Visit a breeder referral website for names of breeders, such as BreedList.com. You can search for breeders based on their breed and location at most breeder referral sites.
Attend a cat show. Most cats in these shows are often handled by their breeders, and if they are handled by someone else the breeder is usually in attendance. Many handlers and breeders will be happy to help you buy a kitten.
Look in your local newspaper. Breeders advertise their new litters.
