What Cat Makes a Sound Like a Screaming Woman?

The mountain lion or cougar has a cry that sounds very similar to a screaming woman or child. The scream can be quite startling, especially in the dark of the night.

    • Mountain lions have an appearance that is similar to the domestic cat and are also known as the puma or cougar. Furthermore, people have nicknamed these rarely seen cats with some quite descriptive names that include: deer tiger, catamount, night crawler, mountain screamer, ghost walker or king cat.

    Cougar Sounds

    • Cougars make sounds that are very similar to the common cat, but when the female is in heat and calling out for male cougars, they make a loud caterwauling sound that mimics that of a woman or child screaming.

    Rarely Heard

    • It is rare to hear a mountain lion screaming, but those unsuspected hikers and campers who have heard these high-pitched screams echoing through the wilderness say it can cause someone to stop in their tracks by momentarily freezing from fear.
