How to Remove Old Cat Urine

Old cat urine is difficult to remove simply because it has had time to set into the carpet or flooring. You not only have to remove surface stains, but you must work to remove the particles deep in the flooring or furniture. Before throwing out your sofa or replacing the carpet or wood flooring, remove old cat urine first by neutralizing the smell and lifting the stain with an enzymatic cleaner.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape and brush any dried urine particles off the surface area, using a scrub brush. If you loosen a considerable amount of particles, vacuum them up.

    • 2

Rinse the area with cold water and scrub again to loosen urine that may be stuck deep down in the fibers of your carpet or furniture. Do not use hot water, as it will promote stain-setting.

    • 3

Pour an enzymatic cleaner directly on the urine spot. Enzymatic cleaners are biodegradable and non-toxic. They work well on stains because they break the stains down so they're easily washed away. Allow the enzymatic cleaner to set on the stain for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Lift up the enzymatic cleaning solution, water, and urine particles, using an extractor or wet vacuum. Continue going over the affected area until it is completely dry. If you are unable to get the area dry with the extractor, allow it to air-dry.

    • 5

Sprinkle baking soda on the affected area once it is completely dry. If the area is still damp, the baking soda will cake onto it. Rub the baking soda into the affected area and let it set for 10 minutes. The baking soda will help lift any remaining odor.

Vacuum up the baking soda. The area should be free from stain and odor. Repeat the steps if a noticeable stain or smell remain.
