How to Get Rid of Cat Feces Odor in Houses

One of the downsides of having an indoor cat is that the animal urinates and defecates into a litter box that is kept within the house. Litter boxes can become smelly if they are not taken care of properly. Also, cats prefer clean litter pans. Compare your own bathroom to your cat's litter box. If your bathroom was a filthy mess, you would probably want to clean it. It is the same situation with cats, except they depend on you to keep their facilities sparkling. Removing a cat feces odor from a house involves a few other solutions as well.

Scoop the litter pan daily to remove feces and urine from the clumping clay. Dump the waste into a garbage bag and throw it away in an outdoor garbage can immediately. Pour a layer of litter over cleaned litter to freshen the box.

Throw away all of the litter once a week, or bi-weekly if you only have one cat. Rub the inside of the litter box with white distilled vinegar to clean it, then rinse it out thoroughly. Dry the box with a towel.

Place a litter pan liner into the litter box so that the edges go up and over the sides of the pan. Sprinkle baking soda over the bottom of the litter pan liner to reduce odor. Pour new clumping litter into the box.

Change your cat's diet to a more balanced food that includes carbohydrates such as rice, wheat, barley and corn. Do this over a period of 7 to 10 days, beginning by adding 25 percent of the new food to 75 percent of the old food for several days. Move onto equal parts old and new food for a few days, then move onto 75 percent new food and 25 percent old food. After a few days, start feeding your can 100 percent new food.
