How to Feed Ferals Without Feeding Raccoons

Feral cats are commonly fed by many people who are concerned about the animals, but have no other options, since the cats cannot be trained to become domestic house pets. Problems come when humans feed feral animals, including the problem of drawing unwanted animals like raccoons to the area. The raccoons will eat all of the food without leaving anything for the feral animals. Fortunately, there are ways to feed the feral animals without feeding the wild animals like raccoons.

Instructions

    • 1

Build an elevated feeder that cannot be climbed by the raccoon. Raccoons are excellent climbers, but they are not able to jump. Feral cats can jump easily onto the feeder to eat while the raccoon is unable to get into the feeder. Aluminum is a deterrent that can be placed around the bottom of the feeder to keep the raccoons away.

    • 2

Remove anything that can be climbed near the feeder. Raccoons are crafty animals and will climb anything nearby that might allow it into the feeder. The best way to keep them from eating the feral food is to ensure nothing is nearby that can be used for a boost.

    • 3

Feed the feral animals during the daylight hours. Raccoons are nocturnal animals, but feral cats are not. Taking time to feed during the daylight hours can avoid the problems with raccoons. Just make sure to remove any extra food before evening comes.

Time feeding for the same time of day each day. This will ultimately attract more cats, but it ensures that there is someone available to watch for raccoons or other wildlife taking over.
