How to Get Rid of Mice Safely in the Home With Cats

Mice are unsanitary, carry diseases and can wreak havoc on your home. According to the University of Connecticut Integrated Pest Management, a pair of mice, within a six-month time frame, will eat about 4 lbs. of food all while excreting some 18,000 fecal droppings or pellets. Keep your cat safe by removing mice from your home naturally and cautiously.

Dip the cotton balls into the peppermint oil and place the soaked cotton balls in your cabinets, pantries and near all entry holes. This natural, cat-safe mice repellent wards off mice. Consider using other natural, cat-safe mice repellents such as Shake-Away, an organic blend of predator scents and the eucalyptus plant, as well. You can purchase natural, cat-safe mice repellents at your local hardware store or florist shop.

Place several live traps a few feet apart in areas where you have seen signs of mice. You can purchase cat-safe, live traps at your local hardware store or humane society. Mice are usually most active at dusk and dawn, therefore check the traps at those times. Take the captured mice outdoors, and release them back into the wild.

Seal all cracks, small holes and entryways with caulk or sheet metal to prevent mice from re-entering your home. According to the University of Nebraska, mice can squeeze through openings slightly larger than 1/4 inch in diameter. Check the edges of your doors and windows for any openings on a weekly basis to ensure your house is mice-proof.
