How to Let a Cat Outside in a New Place

If you are planning a move, you must take special precautions before allowing your cat (that either lives outdoors or is allowed to roam outdoors) free rein of its new outdoor environment. If you immediately allow your pet cat to go outside, it may try to return to your previous home. While you don't have to necessarily convert your kitty to a strictly indoors pet, you should take measures to prevent your cat from disappearing.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait at least one month before attempting to introduce the cat to the new outside environment. Allow it to become familiar with its surroundings and comfortable with its new home.

    • 2

Put the kitty in a pet carrier that is large enough for it to stand up and turn around in, and place the carrier outside, near your home, for a couple of hours each day for approximately one week.

    • 3

Outfit your cat with a harness while it is indoors to allow it to become used to it. Leave the harness on it for a couple of hours each day for about a week. This step can be used in conjunction with Step 2.

    • 4

Clip a leash to your cat's harness and take it outside on the leash. Do not try to walk the cat, allow it to go where it wants and simply follow. Give your cat a 20- to 30-minute outing for approximately three days in a row.

    • 5

Allow your cat to go outside by itself. Try to call it back to you within 30 minutes to one hour. It should know exactly where home is and return to you.
