The Best Way to Remove Cat Urine Smell from Carpet

Your cat may have had an accident, or it may have "missed the mark" while in the litter box. Cat urine can leave a stain and a very foul odor on the carpet. This odor may even linger after you have successfully removed the urine stain from the carpet. A combination of different items that you may already have in your home will eliminate the cat urine smell and stain from your carpet.

Things You'll Need

  • Cloths/paper towels
  • Spray bottle

Instructions

    • 1

Blot the liquid from the carpet if the urine stain is a new one. Either cloths or paper towels can be used in order to dry the carpet. Don't wipe the area, however, or else you may rub the stain into the carpet.

    • 2

Fill a clean spray bottle with one cup of warm water and one cup of white distilled vinegar.

    • 3

Spray the carpet with the liquid. Make sure that you cover all of the urine stain. Refill the spray bottle with water and vinegar, if necessary, and continue spraying until you have covered all of the area.

    • 4

Dry the carpet (as you did in step 1) with cloths or paper towels.

    • 5

Pour roughly one-half cup of baking soda, one-quarter cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and a tablespoon of bleach-free liquid dish soap onto the urine stain. You may need to adjust these amounts, however, for larger stains.

    • 6

Scrub the liquids and baking soda into the carpet using a soft-bristled brush. When you do, a paste should form on the carpet.

    • 7

Wait at least three hours and then vacuum the carpet. You can also leave the cleaning solution on the carpet overnight, if you wish. The solution should remove both the stain and smell from the carpet.
