All Natural Way to Keep Fleas Off a Cat

One or two fleas can quickly turn into thousands, so you want to keep them off of your cat. The most important part of the battle with fleas is to stay on top of the things that prevent fleas from multiplying, such as vacuuming your home weekly and grooming your cat with a flea comb daily, as well as applying flea-repelling products to your home and cats. You may wish to avoid chemicals designed to fight fleas due to their toxicity. Luckily, there are natural alternatives available to keep fleas off of your cat.

Make a natural flea fighting dietary supplement to add to your cat's food. For each cat, combine 1 clove of crushed garlic, 1 tsp. of brewer's yeast and 10 mg of chelated zinc. You can find all of these items at most natural food stores. Mix the supplements into your cat's food daily.

Create a natural flea powder using powdered herbs. Herbs that will repel fleas include eucalyptus, fennel, yellow dock, rosemary, rue, wormwood and citronella. You don't have to use all of the herbs, but use as many as you can find. Combine the powdered herbs in a container with a shaker lid so you can sprinkle it. Dust the mixture over your cat's coat and rub it into his fur with your hand. Brush your cat to distribute the powder evenly. Apply the powder several times a week.

Treat your home environment for fleas. Boric acid is a safe and effective natural substance to use. Steam-clean all carpeting in your home. After it dries, sprinkle boric acid over the carpeting. Wipe up any boric acid dust and vacuum daily for a few days. Salt is also useful for dehydrating fleas and their larva and eggs. It can be ground into a fine powder using a blender or coffee grinder and mixed in with the boric acid.

Set up a natural flea trap in areas of your home where fleas may congregate, such as in a room where your cat spends a lot of time. Fill a shallow bowl or pie pan halfway with water. Stir in a few drops of liquid dish soap. Place the container on the floor and position a light above it. The heat the light creates will attract any fleas in the area, and they will be trapped when they leap into the water.
