Things You'll Need
- Dust-free clumping clay litter
- Bleach
- Baking soda
- Natural volcanic rock
- Litter mat
Instructions
Choose a litter that does not produce a lot of dust. Most non-clumping clay litters tend to raise a substantial amount of dust, particularly when you fill the litter box and the cat scratches a lot in the litter after eliminating. There are several clumping clay litters on the market that produce little or no dust. Most of them also contain ingredients to fight odor.
Place a litter mat on the floor where your cat enters and exits the litter box to eliminate dust and litter your cat may track on its feet. Choose a mat that will feel comfortable for your cat. For instance, the spiky plastic mats that are meant to simulate grass may not feel good for your cat to walk on. Find a mat that is smooth and soft--so your cat is encouraged to use it--and that will effectively remove litter and dust from its feet. There are usually several available at most pet stores.
A clean litter box is an odor-free litter box. Scoop the litter box at least twice a day. Change the litter in the box completely at least once a week. Wash the box once or twice a month using a half-and-half bleach/water solution. Rinse with water and allow to dry thoroughly before re-filling with litter.
Place the litter box in a well-ventilated place, such as a room with an open window or a ceiling vent with a fan. Baking soda is an excellent scent absorber̵2;mix ½ cup into the litter when re-filling the box. Products made from natural volcanic rock and placed near the litter box also absorb odor.
