How to Heat a Cat House for Feral Cats

There may be nothing cuter than a kitty cat. Unfortunately, many kittens go without homes, living out in the cold. Trying to tame these feral cats can be somewhat of a difficult task. Even though they are still considered "wild," providing them with the necessary protection against the cold is a must for most cat lovers. Building them a cat house is the first step in providing shelter against the elements. Providing adequate heat to the cat house is equally important to help keep the feral cats warm.

Wrap the cat house in an old solar pool cover. Solar pool covers are designed to attract and retain heat provided by the sun to keep swimming pool water warm. When added to the cat house it can greatly increase the temperature inside.

    • 2

Install a light fixture with a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. Cover the bulb with a metal shield to lower the light and block the cat from gaining access to the hot bulb. Leaving the light on during the cold nights will provide some warmth.

Purchase a heated bed for the kitty. Heated pet beds come in many different types and styles. Some require an electric outlet to plug into. While others need to only be heated in the microwave and stay warm for up to 12 hours.
